Lasercyn

Lasercyn is a new product we use for dermal filler treatments to decrease the risk of infection.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers such as Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella are used to restore lost volume in the skin and fill in wrinkles and folds. They can be used in a variety of places on your face and body including the cheeks, under eyes, temples, nose, laugh lines, lips, chin, jawline, and backs of the hands. The active ingredient in these products is called hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar found in the skin. Hyaluronic acid draws water into the skin to fill in the wrinkles and folds.

What are the risks for dermal fillers?

With any injection there are risks such as pain, bleeding, bruising, infection, redness, swelling, and tenderness. Infection is a particular concern because sometimes you can get what is called a biofilm in the skin. This is a specific type of infection that is very difficult to treat. In particular, the new fillers such as Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella use a new technology called Vycross to create the product. This technology uses a combination of long strands of hyaluronic acid and short strands of hyaluronic acid. This allows the product to last longer, which is why patients enjoy their results for two or more years with these products. At the same time, the short chains can increase the amount of inflammation in the skin. So we have to be careful when injecting these products. Things like touching the tip of the needle with a gloved finger seen in many videos is often low risk with traditional products. But with these new products this can lead to delayed infections.

How can you decrease the risk for infection?

There are many things Dr. Alex does to decrease the risk for infection with dermal fillers. First the skin is cleaned with basic facial cleanser to remove makeup and debris. Then we numb your skin with numbing cream for about 15 minutes. Then we remove the numbing cream using sterile water and an antiseptic. Initially all that was used was rubbing alcohol, which kills the majority of bacteria. Then, chlorhexidine became available, which works even better than alcohol to kills germs. The problem with chlorhexidine is that it can irritate the eyes. Now we have a new product called Lasercyn, which kills bacteria even better than chlorhexidine and is safe for the eyes and mouth. The active ingredient in Lasercyn is called hypochlorous acid. In addition to killing more bacteria, killing biofilm, and being safe on all areas of the skin, hypochlorous acid also calms the skin and relieves pain and itching. For this reason, we also use it right after laser treatments. Lasercyn also increases blood flow to the skin and helps with wound healing.

At A E Skin, Dr. Alex is always learning about new products and techniques to provide better and safer results. Lasercyn is one example of this. Dr. Alex is committed to providing the safest and most effective treatments for his patients.
