PRP - Platelet Rich Plasma

What is PRP?

PRP is short for platelet rich plasma. This is part of your body’s own blood that contains primarily platelets. Platelets are important for healing in various parts of the body.

What is PRP used for?

PRP has been used for many years to heal various tissues including bones and joints. It is also used for facial rejuvenation. It can either be injected into the skin or applied topically onto the skin after a fractional laser treatment or microneedling. Fractional laser and microneedling treatments create microscopic holes in the skin. These holes act as channels through which the PRP can penetrate. Fractional laser resurfacing such as CO2 produces a precise grid-like pattern of microscopic holes in the skin for the best distribution of the PRP into the entire skin surface. When the PRP is applied topically or injected into the skin, it helps stimulate collagen in order to restore volume and address wrinkles and scars. It also speeds up healing after a fractional laser treatment.

How does PRP work?

PRP contains a number of growth factors which stimulate the skin to recover and form new, fresh, and healthy collagen.

What happens during the PRP treatment?

During the PRP treatment a small amount of blood is drawn from the arm. This blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate the different portions of the blood such as red blood cells, plasma, etc. This allows for a high concentration of platelets, about 3-5 times the normal concentration. This is the platelet rich plasma (PRP). The PRP is then applied topically to the skin after fractional laser resurfacing.

Is the PRP treatment painful?

Most people are very comfortable during a PRP treatment. The most discomfort is when the blood is drawn. This is a typical needle stick that is routinely performed in doctors’ offices. The topical application of PRP is comfortable. Some people feel discomfort during a fractional laser resurfacing treatment. At A E Skin we apply topical numbing cream for one hour before the treatment and use cold air during the treatment to maximize your comfort.

When will I see results after a PRP treatment?

As collagen grows over time, the skin becomes thicker, healthier, and more youthful in appearance. Collagen takes time to grow and results are seen slowly over three to six months.

What is the down time for PRP?

There is no recovery time for the PRP treatment itself. But recovery (redness and swelling) after a fractional CO2 laser can take one to two weeks or more. The great thing is that PRP speeds up this recovery.
