What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a simple treatment performed in the office that can address many concerns associated with aging. Chemical peels treat fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, uneven color, acne, and acne scars without pain or much recovery time. Depending on the ingredients, some chemical peels stimulate your body to for new, fresh, and healthy collagen, providing tightening of your skin. There are many types of chemical peels and they can be very light, very strong, or anywhere in between. The lightest peels are usually enzyme peels performed by estheticians. These act like a deep cleansing of your skin without providing much benefits in terms of anti-aging. The strongest peels are phenol peels and are usually not done anymore since laser technology can provide results that are just as good more safely.

Why do I need a chemical peel?

As you age, dead skin cells accumulate on the surface of your skin. When light hits such skin, it does not reflect, giving a dull appearance. Exfoliation with chemical peels removes this layer and provides a glow to the skin. It works great for a variety of skin conditions including acne, discoloration, enlarged pores, scars, and even some pre-cancerous lesions. When performed in a series at monthly intervals and combined with skin care products such as anti-oxidants, exfoliants, retinoids, bleaching agents, and sunscreens beautiful results can be obtained.

What is in a chemical peel?

There are many ingredients in chemical peels. There is almost always one types of ingredient that will exfoliate the skin. This is why it is called a peel. Common ingredients that exfoliate the skin include enzymes, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, and TCA. Different ingredients can be used depending on your skin type. For example, salicylic acid is useful for oily skin and it is a common ingredient in peels used for acne.

What is the Red Carpet Peel?

The Red Carpet Peel uses the newest technology in peels to provide outstanding results. It works well to correct uneven color such as dark spots, to improve uneven texture such as fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, acne breakouts, stretch marks, and scars, and provides a number of anti-aging benefits for your skin. The Red Carpet Peel is a medical grade peel performed by Dr. Alex. It is stronger than mild peels you can get from your aesthetician so you can expect more noticeable improvement in your skin. The Red Carpet Peel contains a synergistic combination of ingredients to improve fine lines, wrinkles, and discolorations, and at the same time stimulating the production of collagen, leading to tighter skin and closing pores. It’s also perfect for acne and acne scars. Because of the unique blend of ingredients, the treatment is very comfortable, does not require neutralization like other peels, and has an easy recovery process.

What happens during a Red Carpet Peel treatment?

We first take baseline pictures of your skin to monitor your progress. Then your skin will be cleansed with multiple cleansing solutions. This ensures that there is no oil or dirt on your skin which could affect the penetration of the peeling solution. Next a small amount of the peeling solution is gently applied to your skin using gauze or a cotton-tipped application. Depending on your skin and your concerns, multiple layers of the solution may be applied to the skin. You’ll feel a tingling, burning, or itching sensation. Since the Red Carpet Peel is self-neutralizing, this feeling goes away after about a minute. The treatment itself is very fast; it only takes a few minutes. After your treatment we blow cold air on your skin to keep you comfortable. Then we apply aftercare products and sunscreen before you leave the office.

What will happen after my Red Carpet Peel?

After the Red Carpet Peel, you may or may not notice any changes on your skin. With stronger peels, you may feel a sensation like a sunburn and your skin may be red or hot for a few days. This is normal and can be easily treated using cold compresses like ice packs. Your skin may be dry. You may or may not see visible flaking or even peeling of the skin during the first week after your treatment. Some people don't peel at all. This is ok, for the goal is not to peel, it is to get results. These people are actually getting exfoliation, but it is microscopic, so you don't see it. If you do get visible peeling, please do not pick at it, otherwise you may have side effects such as redness, blisters, and discolorations. Sometimes dark spots get darker before they get lighter; this is normal and can take up to two to four weeks. By seven days, the new skin has formed. It is refreshed and rejuvenated, and you will see improvements in color texture and tone.

What should I do after a Red Carpet Peel?

After a Red Carpet Peel Dr. Alex recommends avoiding heat exposure, alcohol consumption, and strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours. Heat exposure refers to going out in the hot sun, if it were to be hot outdoors, but also any hot environment indoors, such as a hot bath, sauna, or steam room. Also avoid hot or spicy foods or drinks like soup, hot coffee, or hot tea because all of these things will bring blood to the skin and cause problem like redness, blister, discolorations, and scars. Avoid makeup for at least 24 hours since your skin will be sensitive. Dr. Alex recommends that men avoid shaving the skin for a few days, again because your skin will be sensitive. Avoid long and hot showers, and when in the shower, do not let the water spray directly on your skin. Collect the water in your hands and gently apply it to your skin. Also avoid harsh rubbing or scrubbing of your skin for one week; do not use products such as washcloths or loofahs. We’ll provide aftercare products to help with the recovery process. The aftercare kit includes the A E Skin Green Tea Soothing Chamomile Mist and the A E Skin Green Tea Healing Ointment. Spray the Soothing Chamomile Mist onto your skin at least twice a day for a week after your treatment. While your skin is still wet apply a thing layer of the Healing Ointment. For faster recovery you can repeat this process every hour while awake. Applying an A E Skin Hydrating Mask to your skin for 30 to 60 minutes one to two days after your treatment will hydrate your skin and speed up your recovery time even more. Be sure to be protecting yourself with sunscreen. Dr. Alex recommends a physical sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Our patients’ favorite is the Alastin Hydratint sunscreen.
