Treatment for the Banana Roll

banana rollThe banana roll is a small area of fat just below the fold under the buttocks. It is a common area of concern since often times diet and exercise doesn’t get rid of this stubborn fat. Now we can treat the banana roll with Kybella.

What is the banana roll?

The banana roll is located just under the butt on the backs of the thighs. It’s a small bulge of fat that sticks out and makes the area look irregular. It is long and thin and looks like a banana, which is why it’s called the banana roll. The banana roll is seen frequently in many people and many people can’t get rid of it no matter how much they diet or exercise. This kind of fat is called stubborn fat because it doesn’t go away with diet and exercise like other areas of fat do. Fortunately, with Kybella we can now treat stubborn fat.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is the first and thus far only FDA-approved non-surgical injectable for stubborn fat. The active ingredient in Kybella is called deoxycholic acid. This is a salt found in the body where it is used to digest the fat that you eat. When placed in the skin, Kybella will dissolve the fat and it’s naturally eliminated by your body slowly over time.

Where can Kybella be used?

Kybella is cleared to treat the double chin under the neck (also called submental fullness). We are also able to use Kybella on other areas such as the belly, bra fat below the underarms, and the banana roll.

How many Kybella treatments do I need?

Most people require anywhere from two to four Kybella treatments. Some people have up to six Kybella treatments. Dr. Alex recommends a minimum of two Kybella treatments. The Kybella treatment sessions are spaced out every three months. Between the first and second Kybella sessions Dr. Alex recommends a series of six laser skin tightening treatments done every one to two weeks. This will tighten the skin and soften any lumps that may appear after the treatment. The best thing about Kybella is that once the fat is gone, the area is no longer able to store nor accumulate fat. So the results are permanent; once you’re done with your series of treatments you won’t need maintenance treatments like you do with Botox, Voluma, Vollure, or Volbella.

What happens during the Kybella treatment?

Before your Kybella treatment we take baseline photographs to monitor your progress. Then we apply numbing cream on the skin for about 15 minutes. After that your skin will be cleaned with water and cleansing solutions to prevent infection. Before the Kybella treatment Dr. Alex will mark the area to be treated. A series of injections are placed in the area. Dr. Alex uses a painless technique to make it very easy. Cold air is blown on the skin to make it even more numb and a vibrating distractor called the beauty bar is placed on the skin. This is seen in the video demonstration shown here. The Kybella treatment takes just a few minutes. After your Kybella treatment the area will feel hot for about 15 minutes and we apply ice packs to cool down the skin. Swelling is seen for about a week after the Kybella treatment and is to be expected. You may feel small lumps in the area over a few weeks, which go away over time. You can resume your normal activities immediately after your Kybella treatment.

How is Kybella used on the banana roll?

The banana roll is a simple area for treatment with Kybella. It is relatively small and can be marked easily. About 20-30 injections are placed on each side and it takes just a few minutes.
