What is the Difference between Voluma and Juvederm?

Voluma is a newer filler made by Allergan, the company that makes BotoxJuvederm, and Latisse, used to address signs of aging including the smile lines, marionette lines, and jowls. It also provides the youthful apple of the cheek, something we lose naturally over time. For years Juvederm has been used to fill and smoothen out the smile lines and marionette lines. So what does Voluma do that Juvederm does not do? In order to address these signs of aging, we need to understand why they occur. We naturally lose the volume in the mid-face (upper cheeks) over time. The fat pads in these areas get smaller and the bones move downward and inward. We also lose collagen over time. Collagen is what keeps the skin nice and tight and firm and youthful in appearance. As a result the skin becomes loose and saggy and with gravity things start to sink. Together these changes lead to these signs of aging. Voluma addresses the source of the problem, the volume loss in the upper cheeks whereas Juvedermaddresses the result of the problem, the lines that form. This is one advantage of Voluma over Juvederm and by addressing the voume loss, you do not see the puffy appearance that is sometimes seen with Juvederm treatments. The second advantage of Voluma over Juvederm is that in addition to treating the smile lines, marionette lines, and jowls, it also gives you back the youthful apple of the cheek. Juvederm does not do this because it is designed to be injected in the lines, not in the upper cheeks. Voluma is designed to be injected on the bones of the upper cheek, giving the structural support you lose over time and providing an instant lift. The third advantage of Voluma over Juvederm is that it is designed to last up to two years with optimal correction. With all of these benefits, why would anyone get Juvederm? Because of these benefits most people start with a Voluma treatment, typically one syringe per side. After a few weeks the swelling will subside and the final results are seen. At this point if further improvement is desired Juvederm can be injected directly into the folds, but less Juvederm will be required. So in this sense, Voluma and Juvederm are complementary to each other in rejuvenating the face. Other treatments such as Botox and Ultherapy can be used to address other wrinkles on the face for even better results. Dr. Alex has performed over 1,000 injectable treatments with many satisfied patients. Contact us for a free consultation with Dr. Alex.
