Water and Skin

About two thirds of the skin is made of water, and it is important to make sure that you are getting enough water into your skin and keeping it there for proper skin function. There are three basic steps in this process. First be sure that you are drinking plenty of water each day. Most doctors recommend drinking at least eight cups of water a day. This means you need to drink water even if you are not thirsty. An easy way to tell if you are drinking enough water is by looking at the color of the urine. It should be almost colorless if you are drinking enough water. If not, your body is telling you that you need to drink more water. When you drink the water, it goes into the blood and gets to all the organs. To make sure that enough water gets into the skin from the blood supply, use a humectant such as hyaluronic acid found in the A E Skin Hydrating Serum. Humectants draw water into the skin. Once the water is in the skin, the third step is to trap that water in the skin and prevent it from evaporating. This is done with moisturizers. Lighter moisturizers such as the Elta MD AM Moisturizer work great for the day because they allow the skin to breath and heavier moisturizers such as the Elta MD PM Moisturizer are better for evening use.
